Spotify Playlists: What I’m Listening to During Writing Sessions

There are two kinds of writers: those who listen to music and those who don’t.

I happen to fall into the first category. As a matter of fact, there’s music streaming around me 20 out of the 24 hours in a day.

From streaming music while I work to changing up the playlists for cooking, reading, or hanging around the house, putting on playlists to wind down for bed, or getting pumped on the drive to my Pilates class… it’s really no exaggeration to say Spotify is usually on around me somewhere.

Because I like to see what others are listening to (and maybe discover a few new playlists), I thought it would be fun to share the top four playlists I’ve been streaming while writing.

Here are four Spotify playlists worth checking out:

#1 Nocturnal Animals (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Abel Korzenioski

I watched Nocturnal Animals not too long ago for the first time. It was a fantastic movie, very colorful and vivid with that extra dash of style thrown in (would expect nothing less from Tom Ford). That being said, the soundtrack hits all the right notes for me — moody, vintage, strings. Whew, love it.

#2 Sad Classical

There’s nothing I love more than emotional, dramatic pieces. In this Spotify playlist, there’s a great selection from some of my favorite composers: Max Richter, Frederic Chopin, and Samuel Barber. If you’re writing or reading, this is a nice playlist without lyrics.

#3 Background Beats

As much as I love sad classical and dark academia, there are times I need a little extra energy while I write. For those occasions, I turn to lofi or chill beats without lyrics — Background Beats is one playlist I saw in an Instagram ad (!) and it is surprisingly mellow enough to have to play in the background without distracting me but still offer that focused energy vibe I want.

#4 Soundtracked

I absolutely love film scores. There are so many great soundtracks (without lyrics) that a lot of the time I find myself inspired by certain movies or television shows. This playlist is awesome because it offers a variety of tempos from dramatic films to fun Marvel series, which always keep things interesting!

So that’s what I’ve got — the four most played Spotify lists I listen to while writing.

Would love to hear what you’re listening to (maybe it’s white noise or background sounds?) while you write.
